Katarina Witt started ice skating at age five. Her talents soon became evident as she enrolled to a special school for children with a talent for sports in Karl-Marx-Stadt. In this school, she was introduced to the teacher Jutta Muler. Witt was second place at the World Championships of Copenhagen in 1982. Her debut was a huge success. The grace and elegant style of Witt drew the attention of the world and she's been a dominant figure skater ever since. Olympic Erfolg At Sarajevo, at the Sarajevo Winter Games in 1984, Katarina won the gold medal for women's figure-skating following a heatedly-contested competition. The following year she took home an even tougher competition. She did not win the free skating contest but she did win gold on the basis of results during the compulsory figure and short programme. Witt became the women's first repeated winner of figure skating, following Sonja Henie. Hall of Fame After enjoying the success of an actress, Witt returned to the sport in the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Games. Though she did not get a medal, she enchanted her audience despite placing seventh. In 1995, Witt received her induction into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
